M Street Kitchen

This weekend, 2 of my very good friends, Christina and Michelle, came to visit me.  We, of course, went to brunch because there is nothing else logical to do on a Sunday morning except eat excess amounts of food.  So we ventured over to M Street Kitchen, one of my favorite spots for dinner, to test out their weekend brunch menu.

As you can see, I had a breakfast sandwich with egg, avocado, turkey, and tomato on a freshly baked english muffin.  Not pictured is the giant plate of hashed browns I also ordered!  YUM, everything was so delicious and fresh.  In my book, if you do breakfast right, you can’t do anything wrong.  Ohh I just love brunch so much.

But of course, seeing these lovely ladies was the best part!  We probably spent 90% of the time instagramming photos on our iPhones but that’s why I love us.  I miss them already and can’t wait for another visit.

…and by kinda, I mean I REALLY love them LOTS and LOTS!

Gjelina Take Away

gta2 Gjelina Take Away

Seeing as Gjelina is one of my favorite restaurants ever, I’ve been dying to test out their next-door venture, GTA (aka Gjelina Take Away) ever since it opened a few weeks ago.  So after some much-needed retail therapy with mumsie and after saying goodbye to one of my best friends before she moves away to North Carolina for school (will missss you Sarita), boyfriend took me over to GTA for lunch.

Oh. my. goodness.  If you live within a 50 mile radius (I take that back, a 100 mile radius!) of Venice Beach, GO TO THERE.  I just had a simple turkey sandwich and a tomato salad but it was best turkey sandwich and the most delicious tomato salad ever.  It’s so amazing what fresh, homemade ingredients will manifest into.  Of course, by homemade, I mean GTA makes everything on property, from the bread to the pickled cucumbers on my sandwich.

So thank you GTA for making my Sunday afternoon a real treat.  Oh that, and the fact that I was wearing a flowy maxi dress (from Anthropologie).  That was a real treat too.

Foraging

FORAGE1 Foraging

We’re going to start this off with a dessert photo because why not?  Dessert is my fave-town.  Forage in Silverlake displays all of their goodies right up front under a glass display.  I’m sorry but I have no resistance to dessert.  Especially when it’s all up in my face.  So I got a gooey, fresh chocolate chip cookie and a chocolate tart.  Yes, just for m’self.

But let’s go back in time (before I ordered the dessert) to set this scenario up a little better.  After the Renegade craft fair, mister boyfriend and I decided to push our Carmageddon luck a little further and drive over to Silverlake (mere minutes from downtown but across the universe from West LA) for some lunch at Forage.  Now Forage is boyfriend’s favorite so he was one happy camper.  The food was unbelievably good, so that made me a happy camper as well.

Forage changes their menu daily but you can always expect it to be fresh, seasonal, and unique.  From white bean couscous to beet, egg, and potato salad, they offer delicious combinations of all my favorite things.

I had the jidori chicken, fattoush salad (consisting of cucumber, tomato, cauliflower, radish, mint, cilantro, and pita chips), and lime creamed corn.  I don’t mess around when it comes to Saturday lunches.  Oh, and of course, I went back in line for round 2 to grab my cookie and tart.

True Food Kitchen

If you follow my twitter, you may have picked up on my obsession with True Food Kitchen.  It’s a recent addition to the Santa Monica Place mall (they have multiple locations, one being at Fashion Island for all my OC peeps!) and it’s pretty much my new favorite place.  To put it bluntly: the food is damn good.

But not only is the food good tasting, it’s also good for you.  Everything on the menu is extremely fresh, wholesome, and full of vitamins.  They really focus on the individual ingredients and even grow their own herbs and some vegetables on property.  I can’t wait to try every single thing on the menu (even their cocktails are bomb.com by the way).

Foodie tip: for lunch, order a sandwich – they come with a sweet potato hash and a tuscan kale salad.  For dinner, order multiple things and share – you’ll want to try the many different options on the menu, from the wild mushroom pizza to the ahi tuna sliders.

Here are some photos from my last trip there:

Postcards from San Francisco

sf15 Postcards from San Francisco

This past weekend, Kyle and I took a small vacation to San Francisco to celebrate New Year’s.  The entire trip revolved around exploring new districts of the city and indulging in delicious food.  I swear, San Francisco has the best food!  On Thursday night, we started our trip in the Marina District, stumbling into a gastrotavern called The Tipsy Pig.  Best. Decision. Ever. Not only is The Tipsy Pig a lively bar, it also has some of the best comfort food I’ve ever had.  3 words: chicken pot pie.  TO DIE FOR.  I have no photos from this gem though, the lighting was too dark sadly (read: I had 2 brewskies).

The rest of the trip was just as magical, from our New Year’s Eve spent at the W Hotel’s bar/club (where I forgot my ID card and had to go back to our hotel to get it – $30 later in cab fare and a total NYE FAIL) to the adventures we had with my very good friend Kristen (a San Franciscoian) and her boyfriend, C.J. (brunch at Absinthe Brasserie, several trips to Zara, searching for Maiden Lane, being tourists in Union Square, deep dish pizza at Little Star).

Here are some highlights from our getaway to San Francisco:

Downtown, Benedict, & Macarons

Have I ever mentioned I’m a sucker for Groupon?  Well…I am.  Whether it be deals on a restaurant, tickets to a local play, or laser hair-removal on the cheap, I practically need the daily Groupon everyday.  So last month when the site was offering 50% off an annual membership to the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown LA, I purchased that Groupon quicker than I could realize I would never actually use it.  Determined to prove myself wrong (about never using it),  Kyle and I decided to head downtown this past Saturday to get our MOCA memberships some usage.

When we got there, we perused around for a hot minute and then realized we needed brunch…and STAT.  Sorry – no photos from MOCA.  Next time, though.  Remember, I have a membership now so I can go back anytime.

As for brunch, we decided upon Bottega Louie, my favorite place in downtown!  I want to live there.  Inside Bottega Louie, I mean.  It’s broken down into 2 parts: the restaurant and the gourmet market.  The restaurant reminds me of New York – loud, industrial, and really classy.  The market is quintessential Paris, full of beautiful tarts and French macarons.  Wandering through Bottega Louie, I felt like I was on vacation!  I was twirling around and snapping photos and giggling aloud!!!  Oh, and the food was exquisite.  So delicious.  Fresh.  Innovative.  Rich in flavor.  Perfectly portioned.  Thanks to Bottega Louie, I have a feeling I’ll be getting lotssss of usage out of my MOCA membership.

Soho Park

sohopark1 Soho Park

Whenever I travel to New York City, I make sure to block out an entire day for shopping in SoHo.  I just love the stores in this part of the city.  Of course there’s Topshop (which can take an entire day in itself), but there’s also Uniqlo, Madewell, J. Crew Women’s, Acne, A.P.C, Opening Ceremony, I could go on forever but since this is a food-related post, I will digress….

After a morning of excessive damage to the AmEx, the best place to sit down, sort through purchases, and have a delicious lunch is undoubtedly SoHo Park on the corner of Prince and Lafayette.  They have an assortment of sandwiches, burgers, and dogs but the true shiners on the menu are the Belgian fries and Southern Fried Pickles.  Oh did I mention that this eatery is not for the faint of heart?  Literally, beware if you have high cholesterol.  But a little indulgence every now and then never hurts!

Plums Café

I love a good brunch. Give me 75 degree weather on a Sunday and a solid brunch menu and I’m satisfied. …which is probably why I love Plums Café in Costa Mesa so much.

Plums Café is a rare gem. Of course, I can’t take credit for discovering this gem! My good friend, Ladi, took me here awhile ago and ever since then, I crave it every time I’m in Orange County. So thank you Lads for introducing Plums to me!

The brunch menu at Plums Café is an eclectic twist on the classics: Raspberry pancakes, Santa Fe Eggs Benedict, Coconut French Toast, Shirred Eggs. The ingredients are fresh, flavorful, and inspired by the Northwest. Oregon Trail (2 buttermilk pancakes, 2 eggs, apple maple sausage) anyone??

Last weekend, I had brunch at Plums Café and it was as satisfying as ever! I had the Northwest Berry Waffle and the most refreshing ginger peach iced tea. Kyle had a bloody mary (of course) and the Spinach and Feta Cheese Omelet.

As for my waffle, I had never seen berries so fresh in the middle of February. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries covered every inch of it – so sweet and succulent too! Don’t even get me started on the whipped cream. This ain’t no Cool Whip, let me tell you. I’m talkin’ heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and a touch of vanilla extract whipped to absolute perfection.

As for Kyle’s omelet, it was a savory mixture of sweet baby tomatoes, salty kalamata olives, spinach, and a hefty layer of feta cheese. Next to the omelet? Rosemary potatoes. Yes, I had quite a few bites. So flavorful and delicious!

And just to answer your question: Yes, I did eat every bite. I don’t mess around when it comes to waffles. img 3205 Plums Café

Chill Winston

 Chill Winston

It’s no secret that I love Vancouver. We’re on a nickname basis. I call it Vancouv. Sometimes Vancity. Jk I was only there for three days in September so we’re not that tight. Am I allowed to call it Vancouv? Hmm…anyways, there’s something about Vancouv that I find absolutely magical. Pictured above is my favorite area called Gastown, a quaint SoHo-esque section of the city, complete with cobblestone streets and brick-facade buildings.

One night in Gastown, Kyle and I had reservations to eat at Boneta. While walking to the restaurant, we passed by Chill Winston and it immediately caught our attention. For Kyle, he simply thought the restaurant looked cool and different. My thoughts, on the other hand, went something like this: Holy hell, Kristen Stewart ate here like two weeks ago. It’s her fave! I knew Perez Hilton was good for something. We are sooo eating here. And so we cancelled our Boneta res and hopped over to Chill (pictured below).

img 2810 2 Chill Winston

I wanted Chill Winston to be my inaugural restaurant post because a) I ate there pretty recently so it’s still fresh in my mind and b) it was, by far, the single best restaurant I’ve ever experienced. I don’t throw those words around easily. In fact, I’ve never made that claim about a restaurant before – that’s why I said it’s the single best. The stars were aligned or something because it passed my restaurant review test with flying colors:

1. The hostess was extremely nice. Vancouv breeds nice people. This is a known fact. But when you are used to the rude, unattentive, holier-than-thou hostesses of Los Angeles who make you stand in the freezing cold and pretend you do not exist (I’m looking at you, Katsuya Hollywood Blvd), a Vancouv hostess is a breath of fresh air. I wanted to be her friend, ask her how her day was, thank her for wearing a cute headband.

2. Just as I was glowing at the thought of becoming friends with the hostess, she sits us in the most incredible area in the entire restaurant! Normally where only special or lucky people sit, we sat in front of the floor-to-ceiling glass window so we could gaze at the sunset and people-watch (both inside and outside!) at the same time.

3. And then the waiter comes and he’s in a head-to-toe hipster getup so I was sure he would be rude and blow cig smoke in our faces. Boy was I wrong. This guy was the nicest guy you’ve ever seen. He gave us a thorough run down of the menu and checked on us often. He wasn’t pushy and never forced us to order bison carpaccio.

4. The menu is a very eclectic mix of cuisines, from popcorn to turkey legs to tuna rolls. I started off with the tuna tartare. The plate was emptied within two minutes but from what I remember, the tuna was wrapped in avocado and had a citrusy flavor. So fresh. For my entree, I had the wild mushroom ravioli. To explain this ravioli in words would be doing the dish a great injustice. There are no words to explain it’s caliber. Swimming in a pool of herb broth, the fresh ravioli was filled with a variety of local mushrooms and topped with the most tender duck breast. I didn’t share with Kyle and he was rather pissed. I paired my ravis with an Italian red wine. I finished my meal off with a chocolate cake concoction, or in Mr. Winston’s words, a Melted Truffle Stuffed Chocolate Gateau. It didn’t matter that I was full, I ate and savored each bite as if it were my last. Overall, the meal was out of this world. Delicious. Perfect.

5. As the night rolled on, the restaurant became more crowded and lively. It had a very lounge feel to it – dark lighting, plush leather couches everywhere, and a huge central bar. Kyle and I dragged our meal out as long as possible because we just did NOT want to leave. Magical, I tell you, magical.

I didn’t see Kristen Stewart. In fact, I was so engrossed in my own meal that I didn’t even look for her. It was that good.
